Summary
Millie Morris has always been one of the guys. A UC Santa Barbara professor, she's terrible at getting personal. And she, just like her four best guy friends and fellow professors, is perma-single.
So when a university function turns into a black-tie gala, Millie and her circle make a pact that they'll join an online dating service to find plus-ones. But there's a hitch: after making the pact, Millie and one of the guys, Reid Campbell, secretly spend the sexiest night of their lives together, but decide they would be better off platonic.
Online dating isn't for the faint of heart. While the guys are inundated with quality matches, Millie's first profile garners nothing but Dick pics. Enter "Catherine" -- Millie's fictional persona, in whose shoes she can be more vulnerable than she's ever been in person. "Catherine" and Reid strike up a digital pen-pal ship...but Millie can't resist temptation in real life, either. Soon, Millie will have to face her worst fear -- intimacy -- or risk losing her best friend.
Perfect for fans of Roxanne and She's the Man, you'll want to swipe right on My Favorite Half Night Stand.
Review
My Favorite Half Night Stand by Christina Lauren was exactly the kind of book I love bringing to the beach. It's funny, quick, a little messy, and filled with heart.
This book is Christina Lauren doing what they do best -- banter that feels effortless, chemistry that crackles, and characters who feel like people you'd actually know (and want to be friends with). Millie is funny and flawed in such a real way, and Reid? He's just chef's kiss. Patient, charming, and emotionally open without ever being too perfect.
The fake profile storyline is equal parts chaotic and heart-wrenching. I was cringing and swooning at the same time, which is my favorite reading mood. And even though the romance is front and center, the book still dives into other themes like emotional intimacy, the masks we wear (especially online), and how scary it is to be seen for who you really are.
Also, major kudos to the friend group in this book -- Ed, Chris, and Alex. Their text messages and in-person hangouts nearly had me laughing out loud. They felt like such a real, lovable crew, and their dynamic is what made the story solid.
I read this on a beach chair in a cabana surrounded by sand and the ocean (and chickens, yikes) and it was perfect. Easy to get into, impossible to put down, and it gave me all the rom-com feels I expect when reading any Christina Lauren (I should know, I've read seven of them now).
If you're into friends to lovers stories with a modern twist, characters who mess up in the most relatable ways, and writing that flows like a conversation with your best friend, then you need to add this to your TBR.
Christina Lauren does it again. Honestly, they never miss.
